Just Like in Real life, Not the Movies

We walked to his room with sparks between us that could probably be seen from miles away, but I felt the pressure of what might await at saying goodbye. I was away in my own mind when we made it to his door. He took my hands in his and pulled me close. As I snapped out of my head, I could feel his breathing next to my cheek, his face moving to meet mine, our hearts pounding as we locked eyes with each other, an irresistible urge to give in. I said sorry and ran away. Continue reading

The Pauses in Traveling

As I sit in my bedroom waiting for my next ship contract to begin, I realize I am surrounded by things that I don’t need, I know my mom has told me countless times, but it is not until you understand that you live a happy life out of a suitcase 8 months out of the year, that you ask yourself. do I really need it all? Continue reading

Only Human

This song plays in the background as I am writing, only human, and I think that sometimes on-board ships you are expected to have this perfect image. This image has to hold in front of guests, co-workers, and sometimes even those you consider close. The thing is that I have realized that I have also come to expect that perfect image of myself, but I am nowhere near perfect. Continue reading

Beauty and the Beast

Fairy tales have been a part of my life as long as I can remember, but I only ever felt a connection to Belle because she liked to read books like me. Yesterday, I found myself in France, not particularly in the city where her story takes place, but one in which mine was coming to an end, Cherbourg. On ships, the routine is the law of the land, but once in a blue moon you find a person who is willing to walk away from it to share time with you. Julian left the ship this morning in between tears and goodbyes clutching a letter that I wrote in his hand, just hours before, however, he was smiling and holding my hand on the way to a surprise picnic he had planned for us in France. No Promises

It was one lucky afternoon that we found each other on the dance floor, and one simple question that ensured we would be at dinner a couple of days later. Strange how two people come to meet on a ship, and the benefits this enclosed space affords. Meeting someone on the ship means not being able to run away from them, seeing them around day and night, and having in theory 24 hours of every day to get to know them. So in theory to make friends on a ship you need to be good at time management. Continue reading

Soul Letters

download (1)

My mom has always said that I am an old soul, that I seem to have been born in the wrong decade or century. I read newspapers, I write poetry, I read books, all things that are not closely related to our generation. My generation seems to be ingrained in technology and living their lives on social media, I also take part in these actions, but for the most part I always hide behind my words. I have always felt more comfortable expressing myself in writing, discovering new worlds through literature or writing an article for the newspaper in pen, before it ever makes it to the screen. I like the feel and the look of words on paper, it is like no other. Continue reading

A Moment Like This

As I am looking at the coast of Spain, a voice tells me to take a step on the edge and stand up. I listen and let myself feel the breeze of the ocean on my face, as I lay one foot on the edge and then another. I look out at the vast space in front of me and realize that I am surrounded by darkness even when the sky is lit up with stars. The moment, however, is anything but dark. In my mind I felt free, I had chosen to let things just be. Continue reading

From Yin to Jan

Ship life comes and goes but so do the people in this space. However, here you may finally understand that special moments are found in many unforeseen places or with people that you otherwise would have never met. On-board a ship is where you will have conversations that will probably never happen again, but that will leave memories that play on forever. Continue reading
